The lists below provide you with some idea of what you might be using and they are also for those not attending the courses but wanting to try the project by themselves. The tools listed are based on the list supplied by Van’s Aircraft for their Training Tool Box Project.

These tools would also provide a very good basis for a kit to build any metal aircraft.

About Squeezers: We recommend the Avery hand squeezer with a 3” yoke. There are several economy squeezers available so why buy the Avery Squeezer?

·         Avery Squeezers provide slightly longer handles - all of the squeezers will set 3/32” rivets and dimple up to 1/8” diameter holes, but it is difficult to set 1/8” rivets with anything but the Avery model. It might say in the advertising blurb that the squeezer can cope with up to 1/8” rivets, but can you exert the force required to squeeze an 1/8” rivet and still keep everything square? Most people can’t.

·         Avery Squeezers have interchangeable yokes that also fit pneumatic squeezers. A 3” yoke is a good compromise between weight, cost, stiffness and reach. That size is not available in some economy models. Interchangeable yokes means a no hole yoke (essential for riveting the control surfaces) or a longeron yoke (the clue is in the name) can be swapped in when required. I know you can’t see yourself splurging £500+ on a pneumatic squeezer, but if you have hundreds of rivets to set you may change your mind. Ask any of the instructors who have a pneumatic squeezer to sell theirs - I know what the answer will be! Only the yokes supplied with Avery squeezers are will fit directly onto a pneumatic squeezer.

·         We do understand that Avery squeezers are expensive, but good tools are never cheap. Second hand squeezers become available only very rarely.
